A learning ecosystem that nurtures natural learning

At Misty Meadows we celebrate that each and every child is following a unique process of self-assembling their understanding (learning) through actively engaging with the ecosystem in which they live.

The primary purpose of our school is to be a rich ecosystem of inputs into each child's self-construction of their own unique understanding. Our ecosystem includes:

  • a diverse range of peers of mixed genders, income groups, races, ages, and interests,

  • a wide range of interesting elders as facilitators and guides,

  • a variety of intellectual models, methods, and inspiration to catalyse deep thinking and understanding in a wide variety of subjects,

  • a variety of practical and physical activities,

  • a variety of creative activities,

  • a variety of awareness expanding activities,

  • a wide variety of tools and resources to learn with and from,

  • a beautiful natural environment to learn within; and

  • plenty of time and space to put conceptual understanding into practice through play and participation.

Our school is designed like a natural ecosystem, to be responsive to feedback loops - always doing more of what we observe to be working, and less of what is not working effectively, exactly like a natural ecosystem does.

Our mission is to support each child in our ecosystem to KNOW who they are, and how to be the best and most capable version of that own unique self.

We recognise that we cannot force children to learn, and that no child will remember anything that they do not actively choose to know, even if they are taught it, so we do not waste time and energy on forcing children to learn things that they are not interested in knowing or understanding (yet). We trust that children will choose to know the things and develop the skills and capacities that are important to their own success, when they are ready to know these things.

If you intuitively know that your child needs more freedom to self-construct a richer and deeper understanding of their world and the role they want to play in it, than what the mainstream monoculture offers, then this is the school for you.
